Luton Town

Three EFL fixtures not to be missed this weekend

It may be international weekend but the English Football League remains in full swing with clubs from both Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two in action.

Ahead of this weekend’s round of matches, we highlight three games which simply cannot be missed as the season heads towards its climax.

AFC Wimbledon v Gillingham

Sky Bet League One is probably one of the most bizarre divisions in world football right now with any club from 12th down potentially in danger of relegation.

AFC Wimbledon go into this afternoon’s match against Gillingham having won each of their last three matches, however, The Dons still find themselves three points away from safety.

Gillingham have collected five points from an available 12 themselves and this fixture has an exciting look about it.

New Dons boss Wally Downes knows all about the old ‘Crazy Gang’ spirit and he certainly seems to be working his magic at Kingsmeadow with safety now a real possibility.

Luton Town v Doncaster Rovers

Promotion to the Sky Bet Championship is edging ever-closer for Sky Bet League One leaders Luton Town who are now surely just two or three wins away from returning to the second tier. Mick Harford’s side are cruising to promotion and are yet to taste defeat in the league in 2019.

This afternoon’s visitors are sixth-placed Doncaster Rovers, a side with promotion hopes of their own. The play-offs offer the most realistic opportunity for Grant McCann’s side to return to the Sky Bet Championship, although they arrive at Kenilworth Road winless in their last six league matches.

There would be no better way for Rovers to bounce back to form than by beating the champions-in-waiting but there are few teams in the country with better form than Luton Town right now.

Notts County v Exeter City

Relegation-threatened Notts County celebrate 125 years since lifting the FA Cup at Meadow Lane this afternoon. Beating Exeter City and claiming three points in the battle to preserve their English Football League status could be every bit as important as that major trophy win.

The Magpies look to be improving under manager Neil Ardley and have collected four points from their last two matches but this afternoon’s task will not be easy against an Exeter City outfit clinging onto a play-off spot by the skin of their teeth.

The Grecians have lost two of their last three matches in Sky Bet League Two and predicting the outcome of this fixture maybe a little more difficult than you would think.
