Holloway Boy

The flat is back and Doncaster hosts this great Premier Raceday on Saturday afternoon on the turf, starting with this listed Doncaster Mile Stakes.

Quite a few of these runners appeal for various reasons but you can certainly narrow it down to just a handful when looking at form when they race for the first time in the season off a long break.

Holloway Boy, Charyn and Knight are the favourites in the betting and for good reason with the latter two performing extremely well and consistent recently in Group 1 contests.

Holloway Boy is interesting though reappearing for the first time since he's been gelded and that could set him up to go even better now.

He was just over five lengths off of Auguste Rodin here in October 2022 in the Futurity Trophy Stakes, on heavy ground but would have surely gone better had he not hung right having been in the lead in the final couple of furlongs.

He was never near threatening when a distant ninth behind Chaldean in the 2000 Guineas in May 2023.

Lightly raced four-year-old and could make a big comeback having been out of the winners' enclosure since his debut at Ascot in 2022.

Marshman & Sophia's Starlight EW

Marshman has been quite consistent in his career so far, even though he's been placed out of the top three on a few occasions it's never been by far enough to be concerned with.

And when you look at the races he's placed seventh or eighth in, they're highly competitive, strong run, Group 1 races.

His task here is somewhat easier and he's back to 6f for the first time in four runs.

Where he placed just three lengths off of Azure Blue in May 2023 in a Group 2 contest.

Can go well on soft too, which bodes well if the there's still a little cut in the ground with its going on Wednesday as soft.

Holds leading claims under Clifford Lee for trainer Karl Burke who's often in form at the start of the season and this horse also goes well first time after a break.

And in the same colours is Sophia's Starlight who is a great price each-way.

She's got to find a little extra based on her comparable ratings and is given 5lb from the colts and geldings in the field.

But if she's improved like she continually showed last year she could well be up there at the finish.

This time last year she was rated just 69 and was very busy last season completing 12 races going up to a mark of 95 within ten contests.

She impressed when going back to the even 6f last time out in a listed fillies stakes at Newmarket and could be back for more as a four-year-old.

The Gatekeeper & Vetiver

The Lincoln Handicap is a difficult one to judge as the mile course is taken on by a strong field of 21.

It's also rarely won by the favourite with no trend of trainer having a domination of the contest in recent years with five different trainers in the last five runnings of the Lincoln.

In fact since 2011 it's been double digit odds in nine of the 12 renewals.

The trend also suggests they have to have a little bit of form recently and among the middle pack in the weights, producing a nice run off one of the top-rated horses.

Johan won this last year off a mark of 102 under Silvestre De Sousa beating Saleymm by over a length at 28/1.

He's gone on to win once since then in just five contests and makes an interesting comeback under the same jockey.

The ground is set to stay on the soft side despite the dry weather due to the amount of rain earlier on in the week.

So a bit of cut in the ground is going to be a vital factor.

And The Gatekeeper fits that perfectly with a great win last time out at Ascot, ahead of some of these rivals too, and upped just 4lb for that victory.

Meanwhile, Vetiver wasn't far off that horse last time out back in October's Balmoral Handicap, just her second run amongst the other sexes and in a handicap.

Stays the same weight and ought to have improved for the top yard in the Cheveley Park Stud colours under David Probert, which gives her a great chance at just four-years-old.

Onethreefivenotout

Onethreefivenotout is one of just two runners on the day for trainer Paul Nicholls that has Harry Cobden on board.

There's a fair bit of hope for this novice hurdler having gone well on a few runs this season already.

He was second to Lump Sum on his second hurdle contest which has proved to be good form with that winner going on to win nicely next time out and achieve an overall rating of 135.

He was just a neck second to Court In The Act at Kempton in a Class 2 Maiden hurdle on Boxing Day which could prove to be decent form too.

His run at Sandown was below par anyway but he did face a tough challenge regardless being a maiden and going up against some top horses in a handicap.

Finally won and broke his maiden tag at Wincanton in February on heavy ground winning comfortably and may just find things flow now he's got his head in front.

Gunsight Ridge

Eaton Collina has won twice in a row now for Kerry Lee and only nudged up another 5lb for latest success over Heros, who went on for a good second on Wednesday afternoon behind the progressive Prairie Wolf.

That's decent enough form to suggest he's got a great chance here carrying a low weight.

However, Gunsight Ridge shouldn't be overlooked - this Midnight Legend gelding at nine-years-old is in great hands with the in-form Olly Murphy and jockey Sean Bowen.

He's not been disgraced in defeat in his last three appearances, bumping into a top improver from the in-form Dan Skelton yard at Sandown in Febraury.

That came a month after he fell at Wetherby in a Class 2 chase and still hasn't been taken down in the weights by the handicapper, so he's due for a good run and on good to soft it may just come back.

Especially back over 21/2m which he's unexposed on over fences, having gone in and around that distance just twice in his chase career.

Placing behind L'Homme Presse back in 2021 and fifth of 13 in December 2022.

Lightly raced since and should have some improvement on offer.

Kay Tara Tara

This is the Grade 2 Mares' Novices' Hurdle over 2m4f which has a lot to like about it.

El Elefante is the strong favourite in the market on Wednesday afternoon but there's a few concerns based on her last run.

Though her form is great behind some top hurdlers recently, that latest run showed she was put through her paces against Kay Tara Tara who reappears as a rival this time.

But as it's a limited handicap, she's now given 11lb rather than going off the same weight they faced last time, which surely gives her a massive chance and an even bigger price of 10/1.

15 days is the time between the two races which may be a bit quick, but it's worth the potential of the Alan King-trained mare who could be improving while at this handy mark.

Jungle Jack

Has been in the top two in nine of his ten hurdle starts.

Came back off a wind op and a few months off with a close second at Kelso in February and is being upped in trip again to what seems a favourable two and a half miles.

Trainer Donald McCain is winless in the last two weeks so it does seem a tad risky to go for a win even if he ends up romping home based on his potential on his second run since a wind operation, but it still pays for him to go top three which looks certain.

Montgomery

Looks a different horse upped to 3m with Venetia Williams - who's seen this seven-year-old gelding win twice in succession comfortably.

He won last time out to a lowly rated chaser in a Class 5 and has to do a lot more upped in grade.

But he did so last time with such ease it's difficult to see him not go on to progress further.

He won here over course and distance back from a long break to comfortably see off Breeze Of The Wind and a couple of higher rated horses.

And had to win last time out while carrying 12st7lb which is no easy feat, but he made it look just that so looks the one to back here in a tricky field.
